Bird in the Hand's first collection, BREADFRUIT, is the re-issuing of a design printed in Jamaica in the 1960s and 70's by Textiles of Jamaica, a company established in 1967They produced screen printed fabric on heavy weight cotton canvas, drill, fine muslins and silks. Their vibrant botanical prints were used in homes across Jamaica before being discovered internationally. In the early 1980's the factory suffered a fire and then ceased trading a few years later. Laura has gathered remnants of these vintage fabrics from across the world. She is reworking them, playing with the scale and colours. There are still further threads of this story to be unravelled.
